Shopify Editions 2025 | What's new at Shopify and why should you care?

A few weeks ago, Shopify unveiled its latest wave of updates, cheekily dubbing it "The Boring Edition." But at Dango, we beg to differ—there's nothing boring about innovations that empower brands to thrive.

This Edition boasts over 150 updates to the platform—what Shopify calls “Nothing new, everything improved.” To us, it’s a masterclass in refinement. These updates may seem subtle, but they pack a punch, streamlining e-commerce development, enhancing optimization, and elevating business operations across the board.

So, why should you care? The Shopify Winter Edition ‘25 zeroes in on enhancing the essential building blocks of e-commerce, giving businesses the tools to level up their game, such as:

  • An improved checkout, thank you page and order page experiences
  • Increased capabilities for customer accounts, segmentation and email marketing
  • More control over search, filters, and product collections
  • More flexibility in subscriptions & product bundles

That said, with over 150 updates, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. So, which ones truly deserve your attention? To save you time, we’ve handpicked a few standouts:

1. Checkout Experience: Faster + Flexible

Faster Checkout

Speed matters, and Shopify understands that better than any other e-commerce platform. The cart now loads up to 50% faster, and Shop Pay, PayPal and Apple Pay buttons now load up to 58.8% faster on the Product Page.

Customers can now interact with the checkout more than one second sooner, thanks to smoother animations and asynchronous loading of customizations.

Improved Thank You & Order Status Pages

Shopify’s free Checkout Blocks app can now be used to tweak the Thank You and Order Status pages to make customizations. Looking for ways to put this into action? Consider adding contact information, a live chat link, or an email address to help customers with order inquiries seamlessly.

Chat Apps in Checkout

Closely related to the one above, this is one we love, because who doesn’t have questions right after ordering in a new store? We can now add a helpful chat app to the thank you page using checkout extensions, or if you're on Shopify Plus, to any checkout page.

2. Collections Automation just got smarter and easier

We are all familiar with Shopify's smart collections (if you are not, you can check out this post) but now, instead of just using product tags, types or prices to create them, we can use metafield values on products. This opens the door to a whole new level of automation and product segmentation.

In other words, this means that you can now create collections that include products or variants with a specific metafield value. For example, you could now create a collection that includes all products with a specific color, or a specific fit, or that belong to a specific season, material, product group or really any feature you can put into a product metafield. And yes, this is one of those “the sky is the limit” cases. So bring it on!

3. Subscriptions Discounts: FINALLY!

This is one we’ve had on our wishlist for a while. Giving loyal customers a discount on their subscriptions just got MUCH easier. You can now offer Buy X Get Y discounts for subscriptions, which means you can give customers a nice little free gift when they subscribe to your products.

This discount can be used to give your customers an additional item for free or an item at a discounted price. For example, you can offer a free shaker bottle with a protein subscription or a free corkscrew with a wine box subscription.

4. Product Bundles: Sell more, effortlessly

Bundles are a proven way to boost sales, with a big number of businesses experiencing higher average order values thanks to them. You can now show customers when a bundle is out of stock before they reach checkout—perfect for fulfillable inventory setups.

What’s more, Shopify’s updated Bundles app takes things up a notch, offering enhanced performance insights, more user-friendly layouts for order pages and emails, and a seamless integration with Shopify POS for in-store sales.

5. Better Customer Accounts, Better Business

Customer account extensions

Personalize customer accounts with apps that deliver powerful functionality. From order management and returns to subscriptions and more, these tools simplify life for both your customers and your support team.

Marketing automation with segments

With Shopify Flow, you can now trigger automations whenever customers join or leave a segment. For example, you can send special offers to customers who haven’t shopped in a while or send a special gift to customers who have reached a certain amount of spending on your site.

6. Subscriptions

Edit subscriptions inline

Easily manage subscriptions directly from the product details page in the admin—no need to rely solely on the Shopify Subscriptions app.

Oversell protection for subscription renewals

Shopify Subscriptions now aligns with your inventory settings, preventing new orders for out-of-stock products when renewing subscriptions.

A few other honorable mentions we’re loving:

  • Tap to Pay: A seamless way to accept payments on the go, now available in more locations.
  • Email Countdown Timer: Add urgency to your campaigns with countdowns.
  • Semantic Search: Customers worldwide can now search in everyday language, with natural search available in more languages.
  • Staff Access by Role: Tailor access levels to fit each team member’s responsibilities.
  • Metafields Controls for Forms: Greater customization and control for your forms.

The Shopify Winter Edition proves that “boring” is anything but dull. With over 150 updates focusing on performance, usability, and innovation, it’s clear that Shopify is committed to empowering brands to thrive in an increasingly competitive e-commerce landscape. Whether it’s streamlined checkouts, smarter collections, enhanced customer accounts, or new ways to manage subscriptions and bundles, these updates give merchants the tools they need to grow and delight their customers.

At Dango, we’re excited about what these changes mean for the future of e-commerce. Now it’s your turn—take advantage of these updates and bring your online store to the next level. After all, in e-commerce, success isn’t just about getting new customers—it’s about creating experiences that keep existing customers coming back.
